Jim Eaton, Vice President of Haskell's Healthcare Division, takes a moment to answer five questions about how his team solves their clients' business issues with their facility services. He discusses everything from the direction of the division to key representative healthcare projects. He even hints at some interesting news to come. 1. What do you see as Haskell’s key competitive advantage or differentiator when it comes to serving the healthcare industry?
Haskell’s diversity of expertise and depth of resources is unique within the industry. In a recent survey conducted at the 2014 ASHE PDC conference, over 60% of owners surveyed reported that they feel like a referee between the members of their project teams. We eliminate that friction and allow our clients to focus their energy on business success and patient care.
We also understand that a flexible, open book and collaborative approach to project planning and delivery is a must for our healthcare clients. Clients can rest assured that the journey they experience with Haskell is transparent and our data driven/metrics-based design is leading the way to solutions that meet clients’ performance needs and reduces operational costs.
Our clients also benefit from our ability to accept full accountability for project performance. The reduction of risk for our clients is a major value-add and has become a key differentiator in the market. Haskell welcomes the opportunity to provide performance and metrics-based solutions to our clients and accept the risk for that performance. Our fully integrated approach produces projects with no contractor or subcontractor generated change orders. Over 70% of owners surveyed in our 2014 ASHE PDC survey reported they pay 3% or more in project change orders. This equates to millions of dollars that can be used for patient care.
2. With over 20 years of experience in healthcare, what common business issues do you see your clients trying to resolve? How do Haskell services help with these issues?
This is indeed an interesting time. Over the past 20 years, I have never seen a more challenging time for our clients, but I have also never seen more opportunity for them to make real change. Our clients are working hard to deal with the new reimbursement structure, increased pressure on cost containment, expansion of ambulatory services, retail medicine, the role of the medical home and the evolving reality of population health.
Progressive clients are formulating their strategy and making bold moves to position themselves for the new normal. Merger, acquisition and strategic alliance activity continues to be desirable among healthcare providers. As provider services are being decentralized and located closer to patients, strategy and facility decision making is becoming more centralized at the corporate level with the larger national and regional healthcare systems.
Haskell’s fully integrated service model provides real value to our clients. In addition to our fully integrated design and construction services, our analytics and operational simulation team helps clients understand their present state operations to maximize performance and minimize operational cost. A client can utilize the full spectrum of integrated services or specific components of those services to best meet their needs and challenges.

3. Where do you see the healthcare industry headed? What trends and recent events do you think will shape the industry as a whole?
The industry is at a very exciting inflection point. Many in the industry have seen this as a time to leave the market. At Haskell, we are more excited than ever about the benefits that we can bring to our healthcare clients and the position that we will have in the market as our clients redefine their business.
There are many forces that are transforming the marketplace. I would first say the shift from fee-for-service reimbursement to fee-for-value is rocking the landscape. I believe it is a needed change in the market. Clients are now much more focused on healthcare business strategy and fully understanding their present state operational efficiency before they consider any capital expenditure. Reduction of cost, improvement in quality outcomes and minimization of waste are top of mind for providers. I believe that the definition “world class design” in healthcare is going to be redefined and will now have a large focus on data and metrics-driven decision making.
The other major trend that I have seen is the recognition from clients that integration of services can provide real value. Cost savings, time reduction, smoother projects and risk transfer are becoming much more desirable in healthcare - as it has been in other major markets for years. While our clients are being challenged to provide accountability across the continuum of care, they need partners who are innovative, willing to be accountable and accept performance risk across their service continuum. Increased use of integrated services in business strategy, clinical operations and facility change will continue. It makes great business sense. These are indeed exciting times.
4. How does Haskell plan to evolve with the industry? What can your clients expect from your division?
We are working hard to position for the future and welcome the changes in the market. We have made strategic additions to our healthcare team in Matt Smith – Healthcare Preconstruction Director and Mike Harden – Director of Project Development. Matt and Mike are longtime veterans in healthcare delivery and bring years of experience in acute and ambulatory care work.
The continued development of our analytics and clinical operations simulation capabilities will be a key focus for us and will bring present state and future state operational consulting expertise to our clients. Data, metrics and performance driven strategy, design and construction are the future and we are positioned well for helping our clients succeed. 5. If you only had one or two projects to show a potential customer before they make a decision about their upcoming project, which one(s) would they be and why?
Well, just choosing two is difficult, but I would select the Scripps Proton Therapy Center and the Florence A. De George Pavilion at the Jupiter Medical Center. Each of these projects are designed and built via Haskell’s fully integrated project delivery approach. While very different in scope and client needs, both are successful in achieving success for the client.
